Spinal Cord Injury Physiotherapy at Home
A spinal cord injury changes how your body works below the level of injury, but it doesn’t have to define what’s possible for your independence and quality of life. I provide specialist spinal cord injury physiotherapy at home across Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding villages, whether you are newly discharged from a spinal centre or living with a longstanding injury and looking for ongoing, focused support.
My focus depends on the level and completeness of your injury, but typically includes safe and efficient transfers (bed, chair, car), wheelchair skills and posture, strengthening above the level of injury, pressure care awareness, and, where mobility potential allows, standing and gait re-education- an area where my background in robotic-assisted gait training on an exoskeleton is directly relevant.
I have worked with spinal cord injury as part of complex neurological caseloads across NHS and private hospital settings, including patients needing respiratory support alongside their physical rehabilitation.
Transfers, wheelchair manoeuvring through your actual doorways and corridors, getting in and out of your car, showering safely- these can only really be assessed and practised properly in your own home, not a clinic gym with a different layout to the one you live with every day. Home visits also mean I can train family members or carers directly in safe transfer techniques, which matters hugely for day to day independence and safety.
Frequently asked questions
Do you work with both complete and incomplete spinal cord injuries?
Yes- I tailor rehabilitation to your specific level and completeness of injury, and to what matters most to you functionally, whether that’s mobility, transfers, or maintaining strength and range of movement.
Can physiotherapy help years after my injury, not just soon after?
Yes. While the fastest changes typically happen in the first year, many people continue to benefit from ongoing physiotherapy well beyond that- to maintain function, address new issues like shoulder pain from wheelchair use, or work towards specific goals.
Will you help train my family or carers in transfers?
Yes, with your agreement I am happy to involve and train family members or carers directly in sessions, which can make daily transfers safer and more manageable for everyone.
Do you liaise with my spinal centre or case manager?
Yes- with your consent, I am glad to work as part of your wider team, including spinal centres, case managers and other treating professionals.
